ACLU

Community Service

ACLU

The ACLU Teen National Advocacy Institute is a week-long residential program in Washington, D.C. that trains high school students in civil rights advocacy and policy work. I participated in this intensive training with ACLU lawyers, lobbyists, and civil rights experts. This is a photo of me & three other participants standing outside Senator Warnock's office in the U.S. Senate Building. The folder contains our policy recommendations on the Kids Online Safety Act. We gained experience in policy research, strategic communications, & legislative advocacy at the ACLU Institute.

The School for Ethics & Global Leadership is a semester-long program in Washington, D.C. for 24 students selected nationwide. Students engage in intensive policy analysis & present recommendations to government officials. Some highlights of this program include co-authoring a 70-page policy document analyzing the suspension of USAID operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; presenting policy recommendations to U.S. State Department officials in April 2025; appearing on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" for a civil political debate in May 2025; participating in lobbying simulation, representing the American Institute of Traditional Energy in meetings with Senator Murkowski's staff; & delivering arguments as Chief Justice Roberts in mock Supreme Court case Bessent v. Dellinger with Moderator Lissa Muscatine.

I have done over 40 hours of service with Meals on Wheels, Apostle House, & Hunger Banquet, helping address food insecurity through meal preparation & distribution.

I have served as a Newark Academy Student Ambassador since 2022, giving tours to prospective families 3 times per year, hosting visiting students monthly, & participating as a panelist in Q&A sessions for parents during Open House events.

I have been an ACLU volunteer since 2019, participating in 3 civil rights marches & conducting phone banking campaigns to elected officials.

Leadership Program for Girls (founder)

I founded & developed Rehearse for Change to help middle school-aged girls gain confidence in advocating for issues they care about after realizing how much my theater background helped me speak up for others at both the ACLU & SEGL programs. I wanted to share techniques I had learned to overcome anxiety, as I noticed that public speaking was not something my peers had practiced as much as I had & that the skills I had gained by being involved in theater helped me be more effective in advocacy work.

Rehearse for Change bridges my love of theater & my call to civic action & engagement. It is a mentorship program that uses role playing, reflection, modeling, & improv to develop oratory skills. The program also focuses on how to support others  who are speaking their truths by learning the power of silence & being a good audience member. Students also analyze examples from plays & movies featuring female leads in advocacy roles.

In my work developing this program, I have designed & launched  rehearseforchange.com, applied for NGO status, & established an advisory board to help guide my ideas & provide feedback on the activities & the curriculum.

Theater & Vocal Arts

Leadership Program for Girls (founder)

Theater & Vocal Arts

I have been involved in theater & vocal arts at my school & in my community since I was 10. Last year, I played Portia in Something Rotten for our school musical. I also played Rosina in Down Neck, a community theater play exploring immigrant families in 1950s Newark.

I was selected as 1 of 12 singers for Academy Voices, a chorale group that participates in competitions. I am 1 of 18 singers in LumeNAtion, which performs at school and local events.

I completed professional training at the Young Actors Program (2020-22) & attended the Papermill Musical Theater Workshop (2024). I also gained stage management experience as assistant director for Urinetown, my school's spring musical.

Spanish

Leadership Program for Girls (founder)

Theater & Vocal Arts

Spanish is the first language of 41-43 million Americans. I am working to become bilingual, and am enrolled in IB Spanish, Higher Level in the fall. I practice conversation weekly with a native speaker outside of school & am participating in a month-long language immersion program in Spain, staying with a host family.

Writing & Research

I love to write & received an Honorable Mention from Scholastic Writing Awards (March 2025) for "Pages Unwritten: Dramatic Piece Inspired by Murakami's The Elephant Vanishes." I have additional submissions under consideration including "One & The Same," "Swimming Up Current: Personal Narrative," & "Navigating the World of Equality: How Women's Involvement in the Political Sphere Creates a Greater Connection To Their Belonging as Citizens." My Blog, "Reflections on Change," allows me to share my thoughts on social engagement & advocacy work.

Human Rights Club, Newark Academy

I have served as VP of the Human Rights Club at our school since 2023, planning bi-monthly meetings and setting strategic annual initiatives. I led recruitment efforts that grew club membership from 10 to 34 students over three years. Our club worked together with the Mental Health Club, Food Club, & the Newark Academy Service Council to increase school-wide programming around human rights issues. We also organized initiatives supporting Rise Against Hunger meal-packing events, Breakfast Brigade food drives, & letter-writing campaigns to state officials advocating for equitable education policies.

"Lunch & Learn" Facilitator, Newark Academy

I was selected by the Upper School Principal to be part of this program with 4 other students. We work to creates monthly forums for peers to gain experience discussing complex current events in structured, respectful dialogue. The History Department Head, Assistant Principal, & Principal help us generate topic ideas & create frameworks for peer-led discussions. I completed facilitator training with Head of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion for this work.

Green Girls Club

I founded this environmental advocacy club at Columbia Grammar & Prep School, focused on climate change & Arctic conservation. In addition to planning & leading bi-monthly meetings, the club organized 3 annual fundraising events that raised $2,000 for the National Resources Defense Council. Our club achieved recognition on the NRDC website & was incorporated into the school's Service Learning Curriculum.
